Measurement Guide

How to take your own measurements at home, accurately.

Body Measurements

Use a tape measure and get help from a friend to measure your body. The same method applies whether you are measuring for men’s or women’s styles.

Neck: The neck measurement is taken around the neck with the tape resting on your shoulders. Leave room for one finger between the tape and your neck if you want some extra allowance.

Chest: Taken as a circumference measurement around your chest at the widest point. Stand in a relaxed posture and breathe out.

Waist: Taken as a circumference measurement around your waist just above your belly button. Stand in a relaxed posture and breathe out.

Seat: Taken as a circumference measurement around your seat at its widest part.

Shirt Length: Taken from the top of the shoulder, close to the mid side of your neck, following your body down to the point where you want your shirt to end.

Shoulder Width: Picture a line running from your armpit straight up to your shoulder. Measure between those two points, holding the tape measure straight.

Sleeve Length: Taken from the point of your shoulder (where you took the shoulder width measurement), following your bent arm down to where you want the sleeve to end. This is always the full length of the arm — even for short or 3/4 sleeves, measure the full arm length.

Bicep: Taken as a circumference measurement around your bicep. Keep your arm relaxed while measuring.

Forearm: Taken as a circumference measurement around your forearm.

Wrist: Taken as a circumference measurement around your wrist. We add movement ease according to the cuff you select.

Copying a Favorite Shirt

Prefer to work from a shirt you already own and love the fit of? Lay it flat and use a tape measure to record the following. Unless noted, these are flat measurements, not circumference measurements.

Collar: Taken from the outer edge of the buttonhole to the center of the button.

Chest: Taken across the shirt at the bottom of the sleeve seams.

Waist: Taken across the shirt at the narrowest part of the waist.

Seat: The bottom width, taken across the shirt at the end of the side seams.

Length: Taken from a point straight out from the center of the neck opening down to where the shirt ends.

Shoulder Width: Taken at the top of the shirt from one sleeve seam to the other.

Sleeve Length: Taken from the top of the shoulder, where the sleeve meets the body, to the end of the cuff.

Bicep: Taken across the sleeve where it meets the shirt body.

Forearm: Taken across the sleeve midway between the bicep and the cuff.

Cuff: Taken across the open cuff, from one end to the other.
